Flying fish are surface-dwelling fishes belonging to the family Exocoetidae. They are found mostly in the open oceans. They have large pectoral fins, long tail fin, and they "leap" or "glide" like flying squirrels over the water surface. One common species is the Atlantic flying fish (Cypselurus heterurus), which reaches up to 38 cm (15 in) in length.
